Have you ever heard of Agave? Today was the first time I saw one in person. It looked like it could be a monster from Ultraman, and it was very powerful.

Kogane-juku

I wanted to continue walking along the Mito Kaido Highway, so I got off at Kashiwa Station.

柏駅前のペデストリアンデッキ

Pedestrian deck in front of Kashiwa Station and Sogo

Out of the east exit is Japan’s first pedestrian deck. Sogo is still there. In the past, Bic Camera used to be a Sogo, so its sales floor space has shrunk considerably.

From the station, follow the road to the southeast for about 300 meters until you reach Mito Kaido Highway, which runs in front of Kashiwa Shrine. Turn left there and head toward Abiko.

旧水戸街道入口の交差点

Intersection with Route 16 (old Mito Kaido Highway entrance)

About a kilometer walk takes you to Route 16. Kashiwa is at the intersection of National Routes 6 and 16, so it can be a bit confusing.

Head in the direction of the sign that says “Turn right here” at Maribert Kashiwa.

マリベール柏

Maribert Kashiwa

It was definitely there. Maribert.
Here, I crossed the Joban Line and came out on the north side.

ケヤキらしき巨木

Giant tree

About 350 meters from the overpass, I found a huge tree! What kind of tree is it? A zelkova tree? Anyway, I was curious about the tree.

Abiko-juku

リュウゼツラン

Agave

I thought only the tree was huge, but not far from Abiko station, I found Agave! It looks like a monster of aloe. If well lit, its power might help to prevent crime.

我孫子市のマンホール

Manhole design of Abiko City

The manhole design of Abiko City is made of coot and azalea.
The coot was chosen as the bird of Abiko City, which has a bird museum, so it is quite an honor.

昔の街道を彷彿させる道

A road reminiscent of an old highway

After passing through the guard almost halfway between Abiko Station and Tennodai Station from south to north, turn immediately to the right and you will come to a road overgrown with plants like this. I guess this is what the highway must have looked like in the old days.

利根川沿いの水田

Paddy fields along the Tone River

I came to a paddy field area along the Tone River.

I was hungry, so I ate the lunch I brought with me while watching the rice being grown. Eating on the riverbank is delicious.

取手の町並み

Townscape of Toride

When I reached Otone Bridge, I could see the town of Toride.

大利根橋から見た利根川

Tone River as seen from Otone Bridge

This is the Tone River, aka Bando Taro. On the right is the main stream of the Tone River, and the small boat is floating in a tributary before it joins the main stream. It’s a picturesque scene, but how are you going to get to the small boat?

Toride-juku

ここから茨城県

Ibaraki Prefecture from here

I entered Ibaraki Prefecture.

The old Mito Kaido highway heads to the right along the Tone River, so I have to cross Route 6. However, there was too much traffic to cross, so I took a left and went under the road.

After passing underneath, I found Toride Station, so that was the end of my walk for today.
