On TV, they sometimes broadcast something like, “In the past, you could see a haunted chimney (Obake Entotsu) from the Joban Line.
This time, I didn’t have any plans after I finished my business in Kitasenju, and the site of the haunted chimney was within a reasonable distance, so I decided to take a walk.

Haunted Chimney Monument

The haunted chimneys were the symbol of TEPCO’s Senju Thermal Power Station. The plant was built along the Sumida River because coal was transported by boat in the early Showa era.

The Asakusa Power Plant, which was the first power plant in Japan to generate electricity at 50 Hz, was also located along the Sumida River, but it seems that the aging of the Asakusa power plant combined with the effects of the Great Kanto Earthquake led to the construction of a new one in Senju.

From the front of Kitasenju Station, go west along a wide street for about a kilometer, and at the end of the street, at the intersection of Senju Tatsuta-cho, turn northwest (Bokutei-dori).

When I passed by Motojukuzeki Inari-o-Okami (Motojukuzeki Inari-o-Okami), I saw the origin of the shrine and it said that it was the guardian shrine of the four former Senju chimneys, so I paid my respects. Next, I passed by Teikyo University of Science and went along the Sumida River.

The top of the embankment was clear, and I was wondering if there was anything there, when I found a ring of actual chimneys and a monument of chimneys near the planting at the southwest corner of Teikyo University of Science.

The four chimneys changed from one to four depending on the direction you looked.

I tried to take pictures of them in different places so that they looked like four chimneys instead of one. How do you like it? Does it look like a haunted chimney?
