Hadakajima
I started my walk from Hadakajima Station on the JR Minobu Line towards Shizuoka.
It soon becomes an uphill slope, and before it is finished, it intersects the Tokiwa River. This is just before the river flows into the Fuji River.
The Minobu line and roads are using the place as much as they want. As the work of the meticulous Japanese, this is probably the most efficient way to utilize land.
I saw on the map that there is a natural monument, seed bearing leaves of Ginkgo, in Yagisawa, about 1km from Hadakajima station, so I took a detour there. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find it.
Instead, we found a massive temporary structure. This is a work platform.
It is used to transport earth and sand excavated from the Trans-Central Expressway, which is being built. It is massive, but the width of the road is quite narrow. A heavy dump truck is going up and down the road. Even though I know that the road is made with material mechanics and safety factors in mind, I am still a little worried about the possibility of it getting crushed.
The roadway is built parallel to this road along the Fuji River, so after a short walk, a different type of work platform appears.
Shionosawa
In this picture, it is supported by many round columns. Does it need to be reinforced with reinforcement like bracing? I can’t tell from looking at it, but are there any root ties or anything like that? Is it safe because it is buried to some extent in the soil?
Minobu
I came to the Minobu Bridge.
Many of the bridges over the Fuji River are truss bridges. About 20 years ago, I took a bus from Minobu Station and crossed this bridge to visit Kuonji Temple, the head temple of Nichiren Buddhism.
I wondered why I had to take a bus and cross the Fuji River, when I had thought that Kuonji Temple was just a short walk from Minobu Station.
It’s called the “Minobu Line”, so the people who built the line must have been well aware of Kuonji. Were they too intimidated to let it pass nearby?
This is the streetscape of the Shonin-dori shopping street.
Since I am walking this time, I can see that they are paying attention to the scenery. If I go into a store, I might want this and that, so I decide to go ahead.
This is Minobu Station.
Compared to the particular landscape of the shopping arcade, it looks like an ordinary building. However, the mailbox is a round post, which is rare these days.
This is a picture of the place where I met the Fuji River again, about 3 km from Minobu Station.
There are numerous tetrapods. I had always thought that holy cows (Hijiri-ushi, Seigi-ushi) or lozenge-shaped cows (Hishi-ushi) were used as water control structures in the Fuji River. Are they used in different ways depending on the terrain and efficacy?
Kai Oshima
I came to Kai Oshima.
Looking at the timetable, the next train was about two hours away.
However, the next train to Utsubuna is about 6km away in a straight line. To go or not to go, that is the question!
In the end, we decided to stay in Kai Oshima and wait for the next train.
