Today I took a walk in Kameido. I found a facility for measuring strong earthquakes.

Gono-hashi Street

Indication of Kameido Station

I have been to Kameido station several times, as I have visited Kameido Tenmangu Shrine and Jyoshuya Kinshicho store.

Tシャツを着て幟を持つ24時間テレビのスタッフ

24-hour TV staff

Today is the day of the 24-hour TV program, and there were several staff members in front of the station wearing T-shirts and holding banners.

First, I went south along the street in front of the station.

五渡亭の浮世絵

Ukiyoe of GOTO-TEI

On your right, you will see a row of large ukiyo-e signboards. GOTO-TEI, an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period, was active in this area. This street is Gonohashi Street, so it seems to be associated with five and five.

Gonohashi spans the Tatekawa River. It is the fifth bridge counting from the Sumida River, so it is the fifth bridge.

I crossed the Ichinohashi Bridge eight years ago when I walked from the Kira Residence to Sengakuji Temple. At the time, I thought it was named Ichinohashi, after the first bridge crossed by the Ako Roshi after their raid. Oh, the misunderstanding.

Ruins of Oitekebori

I turned right at the intersection of Gounohashi Street and headed west. There are at least five intersections in this area that bear the name “Gonohashi”. It must be very familiar to the locals.
After passing through the Etsuchujima branch of the freight line, turn right, walk along the tracks, and when you see Rokin on your left, head that way. Diagonally across from the Rokin is the ruins of Otakebori.
According to the signboard, the moat was a part of the schoolyard of the Third Kameido Junior High School. The shape is drawn as a rectangle. I wonder if it was just like a swimming pool.

Yoshisane

I went back east along the road near the railroad tracks and passed in front of the station; the 24-hour TV crew was already gone.

I headed east on Keiyo Road for about 800 meters, and then diagonally left ahead at the intersection of Kameido 7-chome Higashi.

Yoshisane

After a while, I found Yoshisane’s on my right. It is a reputable knife store. Although it has a store name, it doesn’t look much different from an ordinary house. Actually, when I came here four years ago without a detailed map, I was in a hurry and couldn’t find it even though I passed by it.

I’m not a cook or a househusband, so I’ll probably never own a high-end kitchen knife for myself. But I wanted to know where it was and what it was like, in case someone wanted to give me a knife as a gift in the future. I would like to listen to the master’s knowledge one day.

Strong motion observation facility

he whole surrounding area is Kameido Central Park. This was the Kameido plant of Hitachi, Ltd. until 1972.

Tower near the entrance of Kameido Sports Center

As I passed through the Sobu Line, I saw the Kameido Sports Center and a tower standing at its entrance. It looks as if people are leaning against the pillars from all sides. From the shape of the upper part, I guess it is an exhaust port.

Kameido Strong-motion Observatory, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention

About 100 meters further west, we found the Strong-motion Earthquake Monitoring Facility (K-NET) of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED).

K-NET is a facility for measuring strong earthquakes that cannot be measured by ordinary high-sensitivity seismographs, and there are about 1,000 of them set up nationwide at intervals of about 20 kilometers. The data collected here may be used for emergency earthquake alerts.

This is the first time I have seen this facility. But if there are an average of 20 facilities in each prefectures, I’m sure I’ll have a chance to see them again in the future. I’ll take a walk around the city, looking around more than ever, and report back when I find one!
